  1. Describe
two
major
differences
 from

Map
2.
The major difference between maps one and two is that map one shows all the native american land before Europeans settled it and map two shows the same land after it has been settled by European settlers. In map two, Europeans have settled almost all of North America leaving no land for the the original settlers, the Native Americans. Also the boundaries between territories and land change between map one and map 2.
  2. Describe
three
major
differences
 from
 Map
2
to
Map
4.
One difference between map 2 and map 4 is that the amount of land owned by American Settlers increased especially on the western border. Also territories have been added (Nebraska, Utah, Washington, New Mexico, and Kansas). Lastly, there is less land for native Americans.

ideas
 about
land,
and
what
happened
 when
 these

Using
 prior

 the
 maps
 above,
 infer
 what
will
happen
 when
these two
groups
wanted
to
live
 in
 the
same
areas.
As the two groups want to live in the same area I predict that there will be conflict over the two lands. The Native Americans will fight for the land but fail because of the Settlers advance in weaponry. I also think that the Native Americans will be relocated since the Settlers want to use their land.

Slide 4:
Notes: Describe what conflicts you think would arise if settlers moved into this land.
If settlers moved into this land I think that there would be conflict between both sides and possibly there might be some kinda of battle as a result

Slide 5:
Notes: How do you think the painting "American Progress" by John Gast tells the story of what happened when the settlers moved into the Great Plains?

When settlers moved to the great plains they might have had to battle Native American tribes to seize control of the land. But in the painting there is some sort of gaurdian angel. I think this means that nothing bad will happen and that the settlers believe that god is protecting them and that he destined for them to move into the great plains.

3 out of 3 correct
1. How would you describe the Native Americans' perspective on the land?
a. They believed it was important to live on one piece of land for their entire life.
b. They believed they owned all of the land they lived on, from Mexico to Canada.
c. Native Americans generally moved each season depending on how the land met their needs.
The Native American groups of the Great Plains generally traveled across the continent from season to season to where conditions were best. They moved north in the warmer months and south in the cooler months.
2. Why was land ownership important to the settlers?
a. They could work for themselves and earn their own money.
Unlike in Europe, where the families of many settlers came from, land ownership in America was available to many. This meant that they could own the land, work on it, and make money to support themselves.
b. They could keep the land in its natural state.
c. They believed it made them equal to Native Americans who already owned land.
3. What did settlers believe was their Manifest Destiny?
a. To coexist peacefully with Native Americans who lived in the Great Plains.
b. To set up governments to manage the Native American populations.
c. To take control of all land between the East and West Coasts.
American settlers believed it was their Manifest Destiny to take control of the entire continent, from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Coast. As they settled on the land, they transformed it into what they wanted it to be: farms, railroads, towns, and more.

Slide 7:
Notes: Write at least one way in which Native Americans and settlers viewed the land differently.
Native american viewed land as a place to respect and farm to get food. On the other hand settlers did respect the land as much. They saw the land as an opportunity to conquer and colonize. they destroyed the land and it's greenery. The settlers saw the land as an opportunity to promote buisness and farming. They wanted to use the land for its resources in an unsustainable way. Yet the Native Americans wanted to keep the land healthy.

Slide 8 (one of two tasks)

Notes: Choose two words from the vocabulary list and write a new sentence for each word.

Coexist: In the eyes of the American settlers, Americans and Native Americans could not coexist together in North America so they relocated them.

Transform: American settlers wanted to transform the western boundaries of North America for the benefit of buisness.

Final Assignment:

Choice:
Essay topic 1:
1. Imagine that you are a Native American watching the settlers arrive in your region. Write what you see, and then describe how you feel about these new arrivals and how you think they may change the way you live.

Response:
I am a Native American who belongs to the Cherokee. Just hours ago my fellow Cherokee brothers who were hunting returned to the tribe with news that they had seen American Settlers. We have heard stories about these men and all the bad things that they have been doing to other Native Americans. They want to transform our native lands for their own uses. They also want to destroy the nature in our land so that they can farm and make something called business. Now that they have arrived, my tribe fears the worst. As we talk with them its seems like they will not peacefully coexist with us in this land. They keep mentioning something called a reservation. The settlers say that they are nice places where Native Americans like us can live without the interruption of western settlement. I don't think that we should listen to these men. I think that the stories we heard were right. I think that if we allow them to settle here we will lose all of our best land. I also believe that these men will not respect and treat the land the that it should be treated. All of the western land means a lot to us Native Americans. I also think that these reservations will not have good land. From this we will not be able to farm and receive resources from the land as we usually would. Lastly, I believe that during our relocation to these reservations, we will not be treated with the proper freedom and respect that we deserve. I also fear that many of our elders and children will die from the harsh weather conditions and the long journey. I do not like the idea of American settlers coming into Cherokee and other Native American land and settling it. The land should not have a certain ownership. we should all share the land.
